We're mid-install on a metal roofing job in Portola Valley, and this is one of those projects where the layers underneath matter just as much as what you see on top. Before a single metal panel goes down, the foundation has to be right. That means no shortcuts.

We're running Polyglass Polystick XFR underlayment across a large section of the deck - this is a self-adhered, fire-resistant, high-temp product. It's not the cheapest option, but it's the right one. It seals tight to the deck and holds up under metal panels where heat buildup can be a real issue over time.

Alongside the XFR, we're laying down Therma-sheet insulation. That's the bright silver material you see running across part of the roof. It adds a thermal break between the deck and the panels - helping with heat and energy performance once the home is buttoned up. On a residential metal roofing job like this, skipping that step would be a missed opportunity for the homeowner.

The dark metal panels are already going down on the section that's furthest along. Once the panel work is complete, the difference in what this roof can handle - wind, rain, long-term wear - compared to a standard shingle roof is significant. Metal done right is genuinely built to last.

This is the kind of work where the progress shots tell the real story. Every layer serves a purpose. We take that seriously on every residential roofing job we run, whether it's a full replacement or a new install like this one.
